Social dynamics at school
At my daughter's elementary school, there seems to be social hierarchies, friend competitions, excluding and ignoring. My 8 year old daughter is usually at the bottom of the social hierarchy and often the target of excluding and ignoring. Girls are usually nice to her when it's 1:1 but otherwise she's ignored a lot of the time.
For example, this constantly happens: She'll be with two girls, and they'll address each other but not her. Girl 1 will say "Girl 2, let's go do this", with my daughter standing right there. So then my daughter either has to follow them uninvited or find something else to do. Or she'll be sitting with a group of girls, but if she says anything, they'll pretend like she didn't say anything and continue their conversation not looking at her or responding to her. Or she'll run up to say hi to girls she considers friends, and they'll just walk right past her.
Meanwhile my son is in first grade, and I was so shocked when I took him to meet with two friends at a park, and the boys actually talked to both of each other and didn't leave one out.
Her teachers always give her glowing feedback that she's kind to everyone. She's very sweet and tries really hard to make friends. We recently visited my family in another state, and she had so much fun and was so happy because there were a group of kids that included her and everyone was nice to each other.
Are these dynamics pretty standard in most schools? I'm almost at the point where I want to consider sending her to another school and maybe reset. She just wants a friend she can play with at recess, and I feel like the constant rejection is probably hurting her confidence and self-esteem. Any recommendations on how to support her? Or is this all normal and it'll get better one day?
