Cutting it really close - I live in NY and I have a friend in Texas who said I can live with him. I'm looking to leave NY by the 183rd day and make my way to Texas. What's enough proof?

Taxes

I'm certainly not trying to do anything nefarious, but I'm not trying to pay NY taxes for the whole year if I have a FL-based remote job that will let me work from anywhere. So, I figured I'd move in with a friend in TX and save that money on taxes.

They're okay with it and I have texts saying that up until we work something out with their landlord, but if I have records of leaving NY before July 4th and I change my address with HR, do you think that could be sufficient for not having to pay taxes all year?

I know NY can go after people with storage units or properties or whatever. I may end up getting a storage unit to put stuff that I don't want to fly out just yet.

Now, there's a chance I don't like Texas and I'll come back - if so, then I'll obviously pay NY taxes for the whole year. If not, then I guess I'd have to start updating my driver's license and registering to vote, but... how likely is it that that'll suffice?
