Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade?

Okay, so first off, I just gotta say this. The only Final Fantasy games I've played have been Mobius Final Fantasy (rip) and a tiny bit of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, but because of Magic: The Gathering, my interest in Final Fantasy VII has been piqued. But I need some clarification. I've heard that Remake Intergrade is supposedly a prequel-ish to the original FFVII, but I've also heard just this evening that Remake Intergrade is like a sequel-ish with time travel shenanigans or something? (Both from Reddit posts, if that matters.)

Without spoiling the original or Remake Intergrade (or Rebirth), can anyone please clear up this confusion?
