They shouldn't remove addons, instead should make default UI so good we don't want addons
So they're currently in an arms race against addons, which is fair, if I was a game designer and I knew players have access to a an addon (we all know it's weakauras) which can trivialize most of my designs, I'd be hard pressed to design around it as well.
But just as piracy of media was mostly a problem of ease of access which Netflix remedied a decade ago (then messed up again), addons are a problem of default UI not offering enough information AND the game being designed in that way.
Blizzard boss mods are a step in the right direction, Blizzard damage meter is a step in the right direction as well. But what isn't a step in the right direction is getting rid of combat log+aura access for all addons.
Take arcane mage for an example - you legit can't play the spec to its full potential without Barrage Helper weakaura unless you're the type of player who really wants to go the extra mile and track buffs the entire time, and let me tell you, I think even top 20 guilds and/or mythic+ mages track that stuff via a WA. With combatlog+aura access the spec is going to be kneecapped in that regard.
This is but just one example. They mentioned in a video that if they remove access to addons they'll also remove stuff that addons are dependent on, f.ex. nerf M+ and casts so players don't need to have access to friendly interrupts to properly clear a dungeon. Take current M+ for example - I'm currently almost 3800 rated and there are dungeons (Rookery f.ex.) in which if 2 casts are going on you you're dead. In previous seasons players even at this level used to just shrug and accept it, recently there's a weakaura that lets you know who and what is being targeted by what so you know when to let casts through and when you must save someone. They didn't NEED to make this gameplay design and in turn players wouldn't have NEEDED to create a WeakAura to combat it. But they did it anyway and now they're not happy that players are finding workarounds to toxic gameplay.
We're going into a completely new and different era of WoW where game design is going to be either not touched that much at all and will still stay toxic, or simplified to the point that the game will provide less challenge than it used to and will not be satisfying. The argument for the first statement - try PvPing without addons nowadays, go for it lol, you legit can't, and their removal of addons will not change that unless they also completely rework all classes, because PvP has the same problems PvE has but without the arguments they use for PvE.
Everyone likes Legion, I for one loved the game itself but hated the classes and combat system because it removed a bunch of tools from every class and dumbed the game to the point it was less enjoyable than previous expansions. I have a feeling Midnight or wherever they removed addons will be the same. And for what are they doing this? So they can release the game on consoles so casual Andies that will likely never play the competitive side of the game have the same playing ground as PC players?
Find a middle ground Blizzard.
