How do I view houses as a potential renter?

Hey, I'm being kicked out of my rental and have to start looking for a new place to live. I've never had to view a house as the place I'm currently at is owned by my roommates parents.

How exactly do I view a house/room? Do I ask questions of the landlord? How much do I tell them about myself exactly? I'd appreciate any advice I can get, thank you!!!
