Whatever happened to killer bees?

It seems pretty well-established that many GenXers have carried the fear of being swallowed by quicksand into the present, but I'm surprised I haven't heard anybody mention killer bees before. I remember that there was a time in the late 70s (and maybe into the very early 80s) where there were constant mentions on the news about "Africanized honeybees also known as 'killer bees'" that were on their way up to the US via Mexico to kill us all. I think there were even two movies (one theatrical and one made-for-TV movie?) on the topic. It was such a big topic that SNL even had recurring "Killer Bees" sketches with John Belushi and...I can't remember who...dressed as giant bees who spoke in ridiculous (and now considered racist) Mexican accents.

Anybody else out there with BTSD?
