ThinkPad vs MacBook for Political Science Masters - Need advice please

Discussion

Hello everyone,

I’m a master's student in political science focusing on qualitative research, and I’m torn between purchasing a ThinkPad or a MacBook.

Just to clarify, I’m framing this as ThinkPad vs. MacBook rather than Windows vs. macOS because if I do opt for Windows, I’d definitely go with a ThinkPad.

I’m already in the Apple ecosystem (iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch), so the MacBook would offer seamless integration with features like copy/paste continuity and AirDrop. However, most of my software (Microsoft Office suite, etc.) runs perfectly on both platforms.

My concern is future-proofing: if I pursue a PhD and move into quantitative analysis, I’ve heard that Windows offers broader functionality for statistical software than Mac. Additionally, most corporate environments use Windows, which might be relevant for career prospects.

Honestly, I suspect there’s no compelling academic reason for me to choose a Mac over Windows. The appeal seems largely aesthetic—many postgrad students around me use MacBooks, and watching academic vlogs on YouTube, they do look rather smart and professional.

I realise this might sound like I’ve already decided, but I’d genuinely appreciate hearing your thoughts and experiences. Have any of you faced a similar decision? What factors ultimately swayed you?

Cheers in advance for any advice.
