Does the hit bonus from awakened dynasty apply to the bodyguard only, or also the leader?

Basically, if I'm playing Awakened Dynasty, can I get my overlord's Void Scythe to 2+ by putting him in charge of some goons? Because I want him in charge of goons anyway.
