I had a disagreement with my mom about parenting and i‘m not sure if i‘m right or wrong

Discussion

I have an 8-year-old sister who’s mixed (African and Indian). The argument started because I suggested she try braids. My mom is against it since my sister has softer 3A hair and usually fusses when my mom does her hair. But the thing is, my sister asked for braids after seeing mine.

She actually had Fulani braids when she was 5 and didn’t fuss at all with the braider same with me when I do her hair. She knows how to behave, so I think it’s worth trying again.

That turned into a bigger argument because my mom is the type to just accept it when my sister says no like not making her shower for days if she refuses. I really believe children should be taught why something matters. Same thing with the braids. Instead of giving up, I would’ve explained that it might hurt a bit but she’d have beautiful braids in the end and if she really didn’t like it the first time, she wouldn’t have to do it again. My mom, on the other hand, just takes her “no” without giving any explanation.

Honestly, my sister doesn’t even always say „no“ my mom just assumes she’ll make a fuss and avoids the situation entirely. It’s not that I never agree with my mom; sometimes I also think my sister might end up hating something she wants to try. But at least she’d have the experience and know for herself.

So my question is: Should kids learn through experience, or should parents step in and prevent something if they already think the child won’t like it?
