Does Homewards show it is possible to end homelessness?
Prince William visited Sheffield to mark the two year anniversary of his Homeward pilot programme to fund homelessness initiatives. Homewards says it has one goal, to show it is possible to end homelessness.
I tried to read the Homewards page, but it is unreadable to me as it does not meet even basic accessibility standards. So I had to rely on newspaper articles. But after two years it has:
- Funded new homes in Sheffield that people will move into soon
- Funded some employment projects
- Funded an early intervention programme in Sheffield that is based on a successful Australian programme operating in schools.
This is good for those who are benefitting, but it does not seem any different to me from any tranche of new funding that comes on board. Building housing and employment projects have been around for decades. The Australian project is good to bring to the UK and I hope it makes a difference.
Homewards was criticised at its launch for avoiding the political issues that everyone in the sector knows need to be tackled to tackle homelessness effectively. The line has always been though that William can not be political. And yet he has been political around his support to Palestine and its people.
Is can Homewards achieve its aim of showing it is possible to end homelessness?
Or will be yet another tranche of funding (there have been many in this sector), that does some good, but does little to change the overall landscape? Homelessness has risen in the UK significantly since Homewards was launched two years ago.
