Is it worth paying for a "travel" credit card as a 19 year old?
I'm a 19 year old college student, and I work part time over my breaks. I'm looking to get my first credit card after years of only using debit. From my research it seems that I have 2 options:
-
Get a card with no annual fee and earn around 2% cash back with minimal other benefits
-
Get a "travel" card (ie. chase sapphire preferred) with a ~$100 annual fee but points and cash back on purchases
For context, I am not a big spender but I do prioritize traveling. On average I'd say maybe 3 or 4 week-long trips a year. Thankfully, I had my parents add me as an authorized user on their card years ago so I do have around a 735 credit score. I'm just wondering if it is worth it to get a travel card for my situation. The one downside with the sapphire preferred is that I won't spend $5000 in the first 3 months to get the points bonus (unless I add my parents as users and ask them to spend some on the card too). That's kind of off topic but is that ethical/allowed? Any advice on this decision is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
