weird substance growing in plants

needless to say this is gross and should be removed regardless- this is growing in plants that are at my job, directly next to me, and we’re all worried about whatever we are breathing in. is this safe to be around/breathing in? (i know it isn’t plant-identification, but figured it would be the subreddit for this type of thing) thanks!
