Potty Trained in 10 days
Offering some encouragement for parents who are not using the Oh Crap method. I used pullups. In the beginning, he peed in the potty but wet the pullup just as much. It was half and half and I expected this. My goal was to be consistent and get him used peeing in the potty. I used timing, every 20-25 minutes at first. We didn't sit long, about 10 min at a time. Its frequent but my little one drinks a full 8 oz of liquid when he wakes so his pees are more frequent. Gage your timing by how much they drink. If they are sipping, you can do 30min in the beginning. By day 4 he knew what I wanted him to do when he got on the potty. He was aware that he could pee on demand if he had any in there. He would try immediately when i put him on. Even if only a few drops came, I praised it. For full pees, I did use treats. A fruit snack each time or a Hershey kiss. The treat is your choice. I kept reiterating that pee pee goes in the potty and randomly would ask him where pee pee goes. I would tell him if he has to pee pee, say "potty" so I can take him. Of course he doesnt say it lol but i tell him anyway. We watched a lot of potty songs and ms rachel potty training video. Accidents were still happening but a little less frequently. Like 60/40 split. By day 5 or 6, he was holding it better and peeing on demand, so I introduced training underwear (the thick, padded kind). He peed in them of course and on the couch twice. Each time I just let him feel it and explained that pee pee goes in the potty, not in the special underwear or pullup. Day 7, Accidents were like 70/30. A couple when he had the most liquid but majority of the day was good. I was doing 30 minutes at this point. We were switching in between pullups and training underwear (we only have 5 pair so if he peed in them all, it was pullups the rest of the day). At this point though, the pullups were mainly dry and so I was curious as to what would happen if I tried training underwear the whole day. Day 8, that's what I did. He had one accident in the underwear but wore a second pair the entire rest of the day. Still using timing but he was holding his pee until i took him. Days 9-10, no accidents! I'm still timing every 30-40 min out of caution but sometimes he doesn't have to go and we get up within 3 min. I didnt expect results this fast honestly. I thought it would take months but he has the concept down. Do I expect accidents to still occur occasionally? Yes! And I know sometimes there is a regression, so i will look out for that. But all in all, he got it. As for poop, my son comes always comes to find me when he poops (even before potty training) because he likes to be changed immediately after. and he also makes a certain face. I was able to catch his poops 3 times in the potty and he had one poop accident in the pullup. He goes every other day for reference. Pooping hasn't been an issue thus far because his poop signs are so obvious so I haven't had to do much work there. Any questions are welcome! He's 20 months btw.
SN: sometimes when I knew he was rushing to pee and hurry up and get off, I would make him finish. He would stream and then try to get up. They aren't finished until you see drops following the stream. I would just encourage him and say "not yet, make sure you finish peeing in the potty". This is important because they will finish later as an accident or have to go more frequently if they aren't emptying.
