Why don’t AirPods Max support head gestures?

Discussion 💬

I wish the new head gesture features were supported on AirPods Max. The ability to nod to accept calls or shake your head to dismiss them is such a smart, intuitive feature that Apple added to the AirPods Pro 2 with the H2 chip and iOS 18, and it’s genuinely useful when your hands are full or you’re in public. But for some reason, it’s missing on the Maxes, even though they’re supposed to be the premium option.

And it’s not a hardware issue. AirPods Max already have gyroscopes and accelerometers to track head movement for spatial audio, so they’re clearly capable of detecting nods and shakes. The tech is there, it’s just not being used. Apple seems to be prioritizing the cheaper Pros over the most expensive headphones they sell, which feels backwards. You’d think the flagship model would get at least the same features, if not more.

I get that maybe the user experience with full-sized headphones might feel different, but that should be up to the user. If it’s optional on the Pros, it should be optional on the Maxes too. I’d love to know if anyone else is bothered by this, or if there’s any technical reason I might be missing. Just seems like a missed opportunity and another sign that Apple kind of forgot about these headphones. Max users paid more to get premium audio, so why should cheaper models get exclusive gesture access? Curious to hear your guys' thoughts.
