I am having a problem with buttons.

 Last night my girlfriend and I decided I could try to teach her how to play. I was gonna teach her the basics and chose a character I know how to play. Turns out, her strings and my strings are different. 
 For example, for Takeda's spear special, the input for me is BF 3/Circle/B. For her, the input is BF 2/Triangle/Y. I'm also now noticing that the input technically should match another. I use Forward 2/Triangle/Y and I get a kick, even though isn't it supposed to be technically a back punch. 
 Trying to figure out of this is a Steam thing or controller thing, has anybody else has this issue? I never touched any settings regarding controls on Steam, possibly have on MK and didn't notice but from when I first started learning to now I always used these inputs that are apparently wrong.
