Add a small gas engine to electric cars
This way, you can have a one gallon container of gas, and if you run out of electricity, even if it's inefficient and you get ten miles a gallon, it will get you ten miles, either home, another gas station, or another charger. This is good for emergencies, like of you get to a public charger and it's not working, which has happened to me several times, or maybe when there is a power outage so you have a way to charge your car.
I've seen small generators the size of a mini fridge. I'm sure we could probably make them more compact if there is a need.
They can go on the back of cars, outside on a tow hitch, like some people use for bike racks or those cooler holders. Maybe it could even be run during travel, if you feel so inclined.
In an emergency or range mistakes, it gets the job done.
It's kind of the opposite of a hybrid. Hybrids have small batteries that recharge from your gas engine, and can get you less than a mile on a full charge.
You can also make smaller batteries and get away with it, making it more efficient with less weight. Right now we are trying to add as much range into electric cars as possible, while a majority of the time you're never going to need more than 150 miles of range in a day.
