Looking for a business idea with good return for semi-passive ownership — ~$400k investment
Hi all — I’m exploring ideas for investing up to $400,000 into a business where I can achieve solid returns with a semi-passive role (i.e., willing to put in 10–15 hours a week after initial but not run day-to-day operations full-time).
✅ What I’m looking for:
- A business model that can realistically be run with a manager/operator handling daily operations
- Decent ROI — ideally something that can produce healthy cash flow within 12–24 months
- franchise, distribution, or service business ideas welcome
- Low to moderate marketing and customer acquisition efforts on my part
- U.S.-based (preferably California, but open to other locations)
❌ What I want to avoid:
- Businesses that require heavy owner presence (e.g., restaurants with long hours unless it’s truly manager-run)
- Super high-risk or unproven models
- Businesses where I’ll need to be on-call constantly
I’ve looked into options like boba franchises — open to hearing other creative or overlooked ideas! I sense that boba shops are lot of work with 10-20% profit margin.
👉 If you’ve done something similar or know of businesses that fit these criteria, I’d really appreciate your thoughts on what worked, what didn’t, and what to watch out for.
