CMV: Antisemitism is taken more seriously than Hibernophobia
I’m an Irish-American dual citizen. All 4 of my grandparents came to the US from Ireland in the 1960s. Let’s look at some examples:
Azealia Banks tweeted hate speech towards Irish people. She got a very mild backlash. Ye tweeted hate speech towards Jewish people. He got extreme backlash and lost multiple contracts.
Pete Seeger, who wasn’t Irish, used the anti-Irish slur “p-ddy” in his song “No Irish Need Apply”. No cancellation. (He didn’t write it himself, but would a white artist covering a song by a black artist that used the word “n—-a” get to use the same excuse?) Michael Jackson, who wasn’t Jewish, used the anti-Jewish slur “k-ke” in his song “They Don’t Care About Us”. The ADL crybullied him into censoring it. I’m not offended by Seeger’s song, because I understand his intent was to call out bigotry, not promote it, but for some reason, the ADL intentionally overlooked intent and context to condemn the King of Pop. We can also look at Macklemore, who is straight, using the word “f-gg-t” in his song “Same Love” to call out homophobia in hip-hop (“call each other f-gg-ts behind the keys of a message board”). MJ was held to an unfair double standard.
Similarly, if MJ had said “kick me, m-ck me” instead of “kick me, k-ke me”, do you really think there would have been the same level of backlash?
Mayor Pete Buttigieg was called out for using the term “Pharisee” to describe overly legalistic people. It’s a stretch. Pharisees were a legalistic group of Jews that existed at the time of Jesus, but when Christians use the term, they don’t intend it as an insult to Jews. Meanwhile, no one has ever been cancelled for using “hooligan”, a bastardized version of an Irish surname, to describe a crowd of rowdy drunks.
Catholic traditions like homophobia and misogyny are freely criticized in the public sphere, and critics are not accused of bigotry for their criticism. Whenever the ethnically indefensible Jewish tradition of infant circumcision is criticized in the public sphere, the critic is treated as a bigot and cancelled for it, even when they are Jewish themselves (i.e. Eric Clopper).
