Last year I took an 8 day sewing class where I was only able to attend 5 of the days. Then I signed up for a 4 day quilting 101 class that I was only able to attend day one of. Since then, I've only seen a few hems, an apron, coin pouches and dog bow ties.
My sewing skills are pretty rudimentary and I may have bit off a bit more than I could chew with this project!

The plan: I got the idea that a quilt was the perfect gift to make for my mom for mother's day. My mom made me a quilt when I was a baby out of my baby clothes, which I lovingly dubbed my "Bankie" and still cherish 28 years later so I wanted to do similar for her. My mom is dealing with serious health issues and unfortunately can't do anything besides sit in a chair or lay in bed, so I hoped a lap blanket would bring her comfort.

The positives: It was so much fun to work on! The materials cost roughly $55 and I still have half the fabric I purchased leftover for other projects. And best of all, it made my mom smile!

The problems: I underestimated how long it would take to make and finished it a month and a half late. As well as how hard it would be (everyone on here makes theirs look so flawless!). I did not purchase the right bias tape, it was unbelievably thin and very hard to sew on right. I miscalculated how much bias tape I would need so I cut an extra wide yellow one I had in half so it would look similarly sized. I did not understand how helpful acrylic rulers would be and instead used a regular ruler and a piece of wood to attempt to cut a straight line. My sewing machine started acting up halfway through leading to some very messy stitches and clumps, and it took me a long time to realize my needle was just dull and I needed to replace it.

All in all, I'm really happy with how it turned out because it made my mom happy. Plus, it's fun and colourful!

Any tips and tricks appreciated for my next attempt!

I made my first quilt... and a lot of mistakes! (But my mom loves it!)
