Best Colleges for University of Durham? (International Student with History BA)

NSFW

Hello, I am hoping to transfer and start in the Fall/Autumn of 2026 studying for a History BA. Indeed the concept of colleges confuses me as an American but nevertheless deeply interests me especially the individual quirks and rivalries. I have heard a lot of mixed opinions about each college. I was definitely thinking I’d like to live on the Bailey. Only thing I’m looking for that’s a must is a private room (this excludes St. Chad’s I believe) and a nice social environment as I like to go out a couple times a month and am very sociable and quick to make friends. So a nice social environment is certainly ideal for me. The Castle/University seems like the most sought after College so it looks like I’ll be choosing between St. Cuthbert’s, St. John’s and Hatfield which seems to be the front runner for me due to its size and reputation. Living around the Bailey especially interests me due to the history and its proximity to the Cathedral, Castle as well as many of my classes. Catering would be preferred but it’s not a must. Lastly dumb question but how are Formals in the UK? In the US here they’re normally associated with fraternities where you bring a date. The Gown/no gown requirements for particular colleges is certainly interesting to me (I’d prefer non but it’s not a deal breaker). If you can’t tell I’m a perfectionist and always want to pick the best possible option for me with research and feedback from others. I plan to visit sometime early next year to get a better viewpoint. Thank you very very much in advance for any feedback as this would be of great help navigating as a US student and outsider.
