Do creature activated abilities count as instants?

The card [[Ashling, Flame Dancer]] says "When you cast or copy an instant or sorcery spell..." and I want to know if "instant" applies to creature abilities. I don't think so, because abilities are 'activated' not 'cast' (I think). But I want to confirm. I am unsure because creature abilities can be used at instant speed.
