Moving from Ontario… what can we expect?

Question

Just to paint a picture for you all… My wife and I are both 29 years old with two kids under 4, and we are exploring the idea of moving from the GTA to Calgary, or within a 1 hour commute to Calgary. It would be a quick move, looking to get settled in the first week of August as I have a job lined up for then. I’m curious if anyone who has done this big move before could help shed some light on what to expect or how you have found your experience has been. Also…

  1. what neighborhoods surrounding Calgary are considered to be “family friendly”? Ideally we are within a 1 hour drive to Calgary.

  2. is there a noticeable difference to the cost of living? Research I have done shows items such as groceries and rent may be higher, but lower taxes can help level the monthly budget.

  3. how was finding a family doctor? Or simply transferring OHIP to AHCIP? Reason I ask is because My son is on a waiting list for a minor surgery and my wife has an MRI scheduled (for 10 months from now, lol). We wouldn’t want to lose our progress with the medical events coming up.
