Pap smear questions

Question

I am 24 and I have my first pap scheduled for next week. Every time I see any of my doctors they always give me the “you need to get a pap done” speech, so I finally decided to schedule one. I am terrified and am close to cancelling the appointment. The idea of having someone all up in my business makes me extremely uncomfortable and anxious. I am also extremely self conscious about my body so that doesn’t help. It is with my pcp, because I could not find a gyno that had availability anytime soon. Most were booked out 6 months to a year in advance, and are saving any remaining earlier appointments for people who are having problems only. I am a virgin and I do not plan on being sexually active any time soon. I was also vaccinated for HPV when I was a kid. I also know that I am at a slightly increased risk of certain cancers including ovarian.

I want your HONEST answers. No sugar coating.

What happens at a pap smear?

What will it honestly feel like?

Can I still get a pap done if my period ended a few days before?

Do you usually shave/trim before one?

What was your first one like?

Any tips or advice on how to get through one?

I have seen some people mention to ask for valium before to help calm nerves, but unfortunately valium does nothing for my anxiety. Also bringing someone with me won’t help either, that would be even more embarrassing to me.

I’m know these questions get asked a lot, but writing out my thoughts and having my questions answered directly rather than googling or reading old posts helps calm my anxiety more.
