How are brokers booking carriers?

Do you stick to the board and call on countered/accepted offers and develop your relationships with carriers from there? Looking through truck lanes sounds like a waste of time. So far I hate DAT for booking. Anything besides booking off the board seems too slow-by the time I can find anything the load has already been booked by someone else.

Need to develop some carrier relationships but having a hard time. Please send help.
