Looking for a comic series I read in middle school – centered on a family with mustachioed ancestors across history
Hey everyone — I’ve been trying to track down a comic (or graphic novel series) I read sometime between 2013 and 2016 in my middle school library, and I can’t for the life of me remember the name.
Here’s everything I can recall — hopefully this jogs someone’s memory:
⸻
The Structure: • It followed a modern-day dad with a big mustache telling his two sons stories about their ancestors. • Each story was a flashback that focused on a different ancestor, and the main character changed with each story. • All of the ancestors looked very similar — most had the same distinct mustache as the dad. • Most of the ancestors were involved in major historical conflicts — I specifically remember: • One story set at The Alamo, where the ancestor gets chased by the Mexican army and dies in the battle. • Another with a Western/cowboy setting. • Others involved World War I or II, I believe.
⸻
The Art Style & Format: • The color palette was very minimal — mostly black, white, and beige. • The art was cartoonish, not gritty or realistic — kind of exaggerated or stylized. • It was printed as a large book (possibly a collected edition or omnibus), definitely bigger than a standard comic. • It was shelved in the teen section of the library — so appropriate for kids/middle schoolers. • Inside the front or back covers, there was a family tree layout, showing all the mustachioed ancestors in a row. • I think the title was just the family’s last name — something like The [Surname]s or [Surname] Chronicles, but I could be wrong about that.
⸻
Other Notes: • It wasn’t an indie press book — felt more mainstream, something a school or public library would widely stock. • It definitely had a serialized, comic-book feel rather than a literary YA graphic novel tone. • Probably originally published in the late 2000s to early 2010s, and collected by the time I read it in ~2013–2016.
⸻
I’ve tried searching every way I can — by subject, genre, and visual keywords — but nothing has clicked. If this sounds familiar to anyone, I’d love the help. Even a partial title or publisher would be huge.
Thanks in advance — you could help solve a mystery that’s been driving me nuts for years!
