overexpanded - major influence problem

Hi again. Thanks for everyone who gave advice earlier today. I'm now on my second playthrough. I started focusing on Canada to get the US. I have Canada, Israel, Australia, NZ, UK, the Caribbean and a couple other 1 CP countries.

Its January 2024 and in the round I go my second CP in the US and purged 1 in Mexico to get 3 of 4 there.

In the process I destroyed my CP cap, 277 out of 222. I am now at -5.6 daily influence with a current pool of 387.

What do I do? There is no way I will ever be able to get out of that hole via management research. My understanding is you cannot abandon control points.

Also, how do you actually go about securing a large country with a CP cap so low? you need some territory to build up cash and influence to get CPs in the US. Help!
