Would Ellis be perceived differently if she wasn't white?

DISCUSSION

I was watching the scene where Ellis is lucid and crashes out on Meredith for being 'ordinary' and losing focus on her career in favor of Derek, and she compares her to Cristina in a bad way by asking why Meredith hasn't already chosen a specialty like Cristina?

This scene is taken to be evidence of abuse in most of the discussions I've seen but some comments were saying it's 'typical Asian parenting'. I'm not Asian but I did grow up with some close friends who are Asian and I see what the comments meant because it did seem common for some of them to compare their child to their friends, siblings or cousins and sort of pit them against each other to encourage them to work harder/succeed. That's just from an outsider's perspective but the question is- if Ellis wasn't white would that same scene leave a different impression on you or others in your opinion?
