Bus or metro from Brussels Airport-Zaventem

For our upcoming trip to Brussels, my wife and I will be flying into Brussels Airport-Zaventem. We're staying just outside Brussels (just southeast of the city center). Is it best to take the train into Brussels, then catch a bus to our destination, or hop on a bus at the airport and take the bus all the way to our destination?
