Carrier with Infinity Thermostat is junk so far (as is support)
We inherited a home Carrier 6 zone HVAC system with our new house (new enough to still be under hardware warranty). So far it's disappointing junk, as is support.
The main issue is the controller is 100% random and unreliable. Carrier support pushes you to a local servicer for everything rather than diagnosing anything directly, even when it involves their servers. The local servicer, who also installed it, basically shrugs everything off as if its expected behavior for the Carrier system. Their answer to everything seems to be to force power cycle the whole system and hope it helps for a few hors before everything starts going haywire again.
Some examples of the random behavior:
- The system programming random changes every few hours on its own. It doesn't matter how many times to set the comfort settings and the schedule, wait a few hours and parts of it will be randomly changed on its own. Over and over again. WIth different random changes every time. You can set every zone, every comfort mode, every day of the week and then come back a couple hours later and random zones will have different temperature settings while others remained the same. Some days will be missing comfort setting transitions previously scheduled while others aren't. Some comfort settings will have randomly different fan speeds, etc. By now we've wasted hors resetting everything precisely right about 20 times and it never sticks, and never changes the same way twice.
- The thermostat connection with the Carrier server never remains stable for more than a couple hours after a power reset then stays disconnected until the next power reset. To be clear, the connection to the wifi is fine. Even the connection to the "MYInfinity OTA Server" is fine. But it consistently loses and stays lost on the connection to the "MyInfinity Data Server." Works for a couple hours after a reset, then doesn't. Carrier says talk to a servicer. The servicer says "that's Carrier's problem -- their server is unreliable."
- The system often never stops low level cooling no matter what the settings are, unless you manually turn the whole system off. But sometimes it works, so it's not consistent. And the issue is not the "overcool for humidity feature which only overcools up to 3 degrees. That system is turned off and in any event, it is overcooling by 15+ degrees. Example: Every zone is set to not cool below 76 degrees. Temps in every zone get to 69-71 degrees and every zone says "idle" yet its still pushing low pressure cold air out all the vents and you can hear and feel the system running at the furnace. By morning some rooms are 63 degrees. The thermostat will every show every zoom is well beyond the set point and say idle for every zone and in some cases even say "heating" because its below the heat set point, yet it still pushes more cold air and keeps doing so until its power cycled them it recovers for a while.
Power cycling solves most issues for 1-2 hours then than randomly begin again.
Local Carrier service provider says this is all normal and to just keep power cycling the system. They shrug and say that's Carrier for you. They don't seem to respect Carrier's controllers, apps or servers. And they won't fix it because they say there's nothing to fix. Yet that's who Carrier says to use. Besides being way too high maintenance to constantly have to reprogram the system, its a non-starter to have to power cycle it every day to avoid it eventually freezing the house, even in summer if we are away, yet leaving it turned off could leave the house in the 90's and super humid. At this point a single zone system with a simple thermostat would be preferable to this junk. I wish it was simply a failing thermostat but Carrier isn't saying it it.
