Community Wiki (Draft)

Ask r/tanzania

This is a proposed wiki to improve structure, accessibility, and community vibe for r/tanzania.

This draft offers explanations for each section and is open to community suggestions or moderation feedback.

1. About the Subreddit

Welcome to r/tanzania – the subreddit for everything Tanzanian: culture, travel, language, memes, news, and daily life. Whether you’re local, in the diaspora, an expat, a tourist, or just curious you’re welcome here.

This community thrives on respectful discussion, shared knowledge, and good vibes. Bring your questions, your jokes, or your insights or just lurk and learn. We see you 👀

2. Flair Guidance

Flairs help organize content and signal what kind of post you’re making.

  • Ask [r/tanzania](/r/tanzania) – General questions. “Why is DSTV so expensive?” “What are the best local beers?”, I don't think there is a stupid question.
  • Tourism – Questions or posts related to traveling in, to, or around Tanzania.
  • Culture/Tradition – Anything about Tanzanian food, customs, social norms, language, etc.
  • Swahili Translation – Ask for help with Swahili translation or context.
  • News – Relevant Tanzanian news, politics, or social events.
  • Serious Replies Only – Want thoughtful, respectful, on-topic answers only? Use this flair.
  • Meme/Humor – Tanzanian memes, jokes, and satire (keep it respectful).
  • Weekly Discussion Thread – Official weekly thread for open conversation, rants, and self-promo.

3. Posting Guide

Some general rules of thumb to make posts better for everyone:

  • Always add context, vague titles will get vague answers.
  • Use proper formatting, break up large blocks of text.
  • Avoid clickbait or extremely low-effort posts.
  • Be respectful of different cultures, religions, or tribes.
  • Don’t abuse flairs or spam promotions.
  • Credit sources, especially for news or research.

4. Resources

General Info

Travel & Wildlife

5. Language Help (Swahili 101)

We’re not Duolingo, but we try. Some quick tips:

  • “Jambo” is tourist Swahili — locals use Mambo, Vipi, Habari, etc.
  • “Ng” is like in “singer,” not “finger.”
  • Phrases like Samahani, Asante, Pole, and Naomba go a long way.
  • Use the Swahili Translation flair for anything you're unsure about.

6. Tourism & Travel Tips

  • Visa on arrival is possible, but apply online to be safe [the online is going to take you some but be patient]
  • Always negotiate prices, especially for taxis and souvenirs.
  • Avoid dala-dala rush hour if you value oxygen and your precious valuables[which are likely to be crushed].
  • Zanzibar = semi-autonomous. Dress modestly in town areas.
  • Don’t feed wildlife or flash food around monkeys. They WILL rob you.

7. Culture & Society

  • Over 120 tribes, but the country remains largely peaceful.
  • Religion: Predominantly Christianity and Islam.
  • Respect elders even strangers may be referred to as “baba” or “mama.”
  • Food to try: Pilau, ugali, mishkaki, samaki, chipsi mayai, wali wa nazi.
  • Urban ≠ rural, social dynamics and customs can vary wildly.

8. Wildlife & Nature

  • Home to Kilimanjaro, Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Selous, and more.
  • Best time to visit: June to October (dry season).
  • Foreigners pay more for park access, check TANAPA website.
  • Don’t litter or mess with conservation laws, they’re strictly enforced [if you read this far hi👋🏽].

9. Weekly Discussion Thread 💬

Posted regularly by mods. Use it to:

  • Ask minor or offbeat questions.
  • Promote your event, business, video, art, etc.
  • Share memes that might not deserve a standalone post.
  • Suggest subreddit changes or give feedback.

10. FAQ

Q: Can I post in Swahili?
A: Yes! But adding an English version helps more people reply.

Q: Can I promote my business or YouTube channel?
A: Only in the Weekly Discussion Thread — otherwise, it’s spam.

Q: I had a bad experience in Tanzania. Can I share it?
A: Yes, but keep it factual and civil. No generalizing or hate speech.

Q: Are the mods active?
A: Somewhat. You can always tag them or post feedback.

11. Suggestions for Improvement

This is just a Draft of a community proposal. Future updates could include:

  • New flairs like Food, Expat, or Business
  • Dedicated pages: “Living in Dar,” “Zanzibar for Beginners,” etc.
  • AMAs with locals, park guides, tour operators, etc.
  • More resources in Swahili or tribal languages
