How exactly can you get a character to learn ancient scrolls in Legend Returns GBC?

It seems that it is always greyed out except for the attacks they already know. I think the colored crystals have something to do with it but I don't how to increase them. What is the exact way to learn scrolls? I defeated the pirate captain and kraken and still have not used a single scroll.
