Like many of you, I love Superman. He’s been my favorite superhero for my entire life and one of my favorite, if not my all-time favorite, characters. I’m very confident I’m going to love this movie and many many things in it. But I want to say this. Before you downvote this or respond with a single-sentence snarky comment after reading just a few sentences in, please, actually read what I say.

While I do believe I’m going to *love* this film, I’m probably not going to love *every single thing in it.* At the end of the day, it is just one interpretation of the character. Gunn and Corenswet’s interpretation. It would be a disservice to say a singular movie version is the definitive one.

My one primary worry about this movie from the start has been that it might try to *over-correct* the mistakes from Man Of Steel, while I think a middle-ground approach is most appropriate. And it could very well still make that overcorrection. I DO think Superman can be made to be *too* goofy, *too* light-hearted. He’s not Spider-Man. He’s never been like Spider-Man, and I don’t want him to be like Spider-Man. I think there should be a certain weight and seriousness to his presence. A weight and seriousness spawned from his moral excellence and well-respected resume of heroism and sacrifice. And that weight should be offset by his friendliness and willingness to help.

My least favorite thing I’ve seen in various posts recently is that Zack Snyder saw the SUPER in Superman while Gunn sees the MAN in Superman. But guys, it’s *SUPERMAN.* He’s both.

I do not have a definitive on-screen Superman. Closest thing is the animated series. I think that really captures the weight I’m referring to. But ultimately it’s just comic Superman. Superman in the hands of Grant Morrison, Scott Snyder, Jeph Loeb, Geoff Johns, etc. That is Superman to me. And various animated and live action version of the character have given their own interpretation of things. I do not think I am going to walk away from this movie thinking “wow, that was the definitive Superman.” I’m going to walk away loving it for sure, I’m going to walk away loving the flavor that Gunn and Corenswet bring to the character. But he is still one interpretation. And I think many should keep that in mind.

More Than One Superman
