First(ish) fighting game ever, modern or classic? (SF6)

This question may be asked a million times but this is my first fighting game (SF6), and I was wondering if it'd be better to try and learn the classic controls first before I get used to the modern controls. I have no doubt that I can pour a ton of hours into learning classic first, I have the time and grit to do so. I guess I am kind of also wondering how well the switch from modern -> classic translates. (I say ish in the title because I played a bunch of fighting games just against my friends never online like MK1, MK11, Smash Ultimate, but never bothered to like learn game mechanics or anything).
