How to make a bassline that is compatible with the melody while still having a character of its own?

Sometimes I come up with a good melody and then I make a decent bassline, but when I play them together, they are clashing (not just a mixing problem).

I want a bassline that isn't just a root note repeating, but is also interactive with the melody.

Any tips?
