Bugs in Maine end of June were a misery- is the worst over?

I was in Maine June 23-25 and the bugs were making me miserable. I have always been highly attractive to bugs, and have a strong histamine reaction. I was getting bit through 2 layers of thermals- even rainpants, already loaded down with deep woods bug spray. I ended up wearing my drysuit the last three days just to keep the bugs off me.

Please reassure me that this was the worst of it, I was planning on going to Vermont next week but really don't want to go through that again. Any ideas for hot weather bug-proof clothes would also be appreicated.
