Final Fantasy Tactics isn't fun
I tried to get into this game a few years ago and just could not get into it to the point that I dropped it entirely. With the announcement of the remaster, I tried it again recently and I felt exactly the same as I did before. It's just not fun.
First off, I like general gameplay. I'm stranger to trpgs, I tend to really like them. I'll admit I'm not super good or anything. I haven't gotten past Slums of Dorter despite everything beforehand being fairly breezy. That's fine. I'm fine with getting good. But I look up guides and read about the little mechanics whatnot and none of it sounds particularly interesting. Like, really? A zodiac sign rock, paper, scissors system?
The biggest issue for me is it feels too meta for an rpg. Especially one that is heavy on story. For instance, a big strategy in this game is attacking your own party members for xp and jp. There's simply no good roleplay reason for that to happen. And, yes, I could just not do that, but it's kinda too good of a strat not to do. Ramza is too good at killing compared to my nobodies. Delita is named that way cause he deletes enemies off the field and steals my xp. Either I break immersion or I neuter myself
I do want to enjoy this game but my attempts to do so have left me feeling frustrated and empty. Is there something I'm missing here or should I just move on to something else?
