Merced River (CA) advice?

Hey folks. I’m going to be visiting a friend in Midpines next weekend and will be very close to the Merced along Hwy 140 outside YNP.

I know lots of the Sierra Nevada rivers’ fishing trends, but not this one. Anybody have any insight to offer, without giving away cherished secrets?

Added bonus: I might be taking a newcomer teen to the water one day, so further advice on easier water would be even more welcome.
