Foreign MD (Anesthesia) doctor from India Got Orthopedics job offer in Germany, but should I wait for Anesthesia job?
Hi everyone, I'm a foreign medical graduate from India with an MD in Anesthesiology. I'm currently in Germany, working toward Approbation and looking to establish my medical career here.
I was actively searching for a job as an assistant doctor (Assistenzarzt) in Anesthesia and recently did some internships (Hospitation) in that field. But, coincidentally, I got an unexpected job offer from a hospital in the Orthopedics department.
Now I'm stuck in a dilemma:
I still have one more Hospitation next month in Anesthesia, but there's no guarantee that it will lead to a job.
The Ortho job is secured and starting soon, but it's completely outside my current specialty. I would have to learn everything from scratch.
I'm not sure if switching specialties in Germany is a smart move long-term, especially since I already have a postgrad degree (MD Anesthesia) from India.
My long-term goal is to settle in Germany with Approbation and either work in anesthesia or a related field with good job stability and future scope. But I also want to be practical the Ortho job is on the table now, while the Anesthesia job is still uncertain.
Would you take the Ortho job and switch fields, or wait for a potential Anesthesia job that may or may not come? Any insight from those who’ve been through similar situations in Germany would be super appreciated.
Thanks in advance!
