ChatGPT for Research Proposals: Is the Price Worth the PhD-Level Output?

Classes & workshops

If you’re starting a research degree, you need a solid proposal. I tested ChatGPT (soon GPT-5) on a July 4th case study, and the results were impressive.
It generated ethical research proposals in 6 structured steps—topic creation, scope narrowing, layout, citations, human tone, and even a Gantt chart.
For example, it produced 19 themed research topics (history, politics, media) and drilled down to “elite vs. mass mobilization” in US vs. Indian independence.
It added citations from Elsevier Q1 journals in IEEE style—crucial for postgrad credibility.
Then it refined the tone to sound more human, and output a Gantt chart with milestones.
All this for the price of a ChatGPT Plus subscription ($20/month).
With GPT-5 around the corner—rumored to support reasoning, video input, and AI agents—it’s only getting stronger.
Use responsibly: cite properly, verify sources, and always refine.

Are we heading toward proposal writing at scale? Or a new academic norm?
