Curse limit on mercenary and player

Hi, I am so confused of the wording in this game. Especially my English is not my first language. My question is. I have 5 curse limit on my merc and default curse limit on myself. In my understanding from the wiki is that a monster can have up to 5 curses at once. So my dilemma is. If i apply 3 curses and my merc 2, does it work ? I can't tell on screen how many curses are there . Too much clutter on screen.
