Anyone else get frustrated by visual/imagery-based therapy methods?
I’m in a situation where I can’t choose my therapist right now, so I have to take what I can get.
That said. I’m struggling a lot with certain therapeutic methods that involve visualization or metaphorical imagery. Things like: “Imagine a sun is shining inside your body and dissolving your problems” or “Picture putting your thoughts into a box and closing it.”
I get that some people find this helpful, but for me it just feels absurd. I don’t connect to it at all. It makes me feel like an idiot, like I’m playing pretend in some weird performance.
I need tools that are logical, concrete, and make sense not exercises that feel like they belong in a children’s book.
Am I the only one who feels this way? Or are there others who also find this kind of approach more aggravating than helpful?
