You’re Not Winning Because You’re Not Ending
How to Actually Take Towers and Close Out Games in League of Legends (Without Throwing)
“We Were Ahead… Then We Lost.”
Sound familiar?
You had a gold lead.
You were up 3–1 in Dragons.
You won teamfights.
Then somehow, the enemy outscaled, took Baron, and ended the game.
You didn’t lose to better players — you lost to bad macro habits. Specifically: you didn’t know how to push a lead into a win.
You thought you were winning because you were ahead in kills.
But you never took towers.
You never choked vision.
You never set up waves or fog pressure.
You never converted the lead into map advantage.
Let’s change that — right now.
What Winning Really Means in League of Legends
League is not won through kills — it’s won through map control and objective sequencing.
Kills help you win fights.
Objectives win the game.
If you’re not taking towers, setting up waves, or moving through jungle with tempo, then your 10–2 scoreline is nothing but stat-padding.
So how do you convert leads into tower pressure?
That’s where real macro begins.
The Truth About Towers: They're Not Optional
Every tower you take gives you:
- Gold and local EXP
- Vision denial and jungle access
- Shorter rotation distances
- Increased map control for future setups
But more importantly, towers are a signal. They represent control.
When you take mid outer tower, you:
- Open up river control
- Create fog pockets for vision traps
- Make it easier to collapse from side lanes
When you take bot tier 2, you:
- Threaten inhibitor access
- Pull the enemy team across the map
- Force bad resets or awkward pathing
Tower pressure creates tempo, and tempo wins the game before the fight happens.
Why Most Solo Queue Players Never Take Towers
Three reasons:
- They chase kills instead of waves
- They don’t understand wave tempo or reset windows
- They overstay after a kill instead of pushing with numbers
Imagine this: You kill two enemies at 18 minutes near mid lane. What do you do?
- A low-ELO player chases the jungle or goes to farm raptors.
- A mid-ELO player does nothing, waits for Dragon.
- A high-ELO player pushes mid wave, crashes it, and takes tower.
If the tower's down?
They crash wave, reset with tempo, and invade enemy jungle with vision.
Every kill should lead to:
- A wave crash
- A tower take
- A reset for vision or tempo advantage
That’s how pro teams close out games. That’s how smart solo queue players snowball.
How to Take Towers Without Throwing
Here’s the sequence:
- Crash wave into tower with numbers advantage
- Drop vision around the area (especially jungle entrances)
- Ping teammates to collapse and hit tower together
- Check side waves before overstaying
- If enemy respawns soon or fog is dark — back off and reset
Tower pressure is not about diving tier 3 at 16 minutes — it’s about applying safe, repeatable pressure that increases map control over time.
If your whole team is up and enemy is dead or recalling — you push.
If you got a kill mid and have a wave? Push.
If you’re grouped 5v4 and side is pushing? Force the tower.
Tower vs Reset: How to Decide
This is one of the hardest concepts for Iron–Plat players:
The answer is: check wave + gold + fog.
Push if:
- You have a wave crashing
- You’re 4+ alive and grouped
- The enemy is dead or clearing sides
- Your team has tempo and vision
Reset if:
- You have 1,000+ gold
- No wave to crash
- Fog is dark and enemy respawn timers are low
- Your side lanes are pushing into you
Remember: sometimes the best tower push is… the next one.
Resetting at the right time lets you push again with full vision, tempo, and pressure.
Side Lanes Are the Key to Tower Progression
You don’t always take towers mid.
In fact, the cleanest games are won through side lane pressure that opens up objectives.
Example: You’re ahead. Bot is pushing. You rotate 3 people bot, push wave, kill enemy, and take bot tier 2.
Now what?
- Mid rotates down.
- Jungle drops control wards in enemy jungle.
- You shift pressure to Baron with full fog and top wave slow pushing.
Suddenly the map is unplayable for the enemy.
Not because of a fight — but because you took the right towers at the right time.
Real Game Example: The Tower Conversion Chain
You’re playing Sylas.
It’s 14:00.
You get a solo kill mid and crash the wave. What do you do?
- Ping jungle to come mid.
- Take mid outer tower.
- Drop ward in raptor or red jungle.
- Reset with 1,000+ gold.
- Come back mid → push wave → rotate bot.
- Stack wave with your bot lane → dive and take bot tower.
- Ping for Dragon setup.
That’s not “high-level play.”
That’s macro sequencing.
Kills → Tower → Vision → Reset → Tower → Objective
What to Do When Towers Are Down
So you took all outers. Now what?
- Push side lanes to tier 2
- Pressure jungle entrances with pinks
- Control fog pockets (behind mid, side bushes, tri-bush)
- Trap in jungle for picks
- Force objective or Baron rotation
Most games stall at this point because players don’t know how to push further.
The answer is pressure and punish.
You’re not waiting — you’re setting up the next move based on wave tempo and fog control.
Every time the enemy walks up without vision? Free pick.
Every time they catch a wave while you group? Free Baron.
What Happens When You Don’t Push Towers
If you don’t push towers when ahead, here’s what you allow:
- Enemy hits item spikes safely
- Waves push into you and stall tempo
- They get time to place vision for the next objective
- Your lead becomes a coinflip — not a win condition
You’re not throwing by getting caught — you’re throwing by standing still.
Don’t Just Fight — Build the Map Behind You
League isn’t a brawl — it’s a structure game.
You build advantages, you claim territory, and you shut the map down before the enemy can scale.
If you start thinking in terms of:
- Towers → Vision → Resets → Objectives instead of
- Kills → Chaos → Hope it works out
… you’ll climb. Every single season.
