Looking for a versatile bass with great vintage fingerstyle and modern slap tones

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for a 4-string bass that can genuinely deliver both:

  1. warm, vintage-style fingerstyle tone (think passive, like joe dart or jaco pastorious)

  2. clear, powerful modern slap tone (active EQ, bright and punchy, like marcus miller)

I know many “versatile” basses exist, but often that just means they sound average at everything. I want something that actually excels in both areas.

Budget around $1500, flexible if truly worth it

I’ve been considering things like Sandberg TT4 Plus, Sire V7, Fender Ultra Jazz, would love your insight if you’ve tried any of these, or have other recommendations.

Please feel free to recommend not only specific bass models, but also pickup configurations, wood types etc. you think would help achieve this duality. I’m trying to understand why a bass works, not just which bass to buy.
