Is Diploma in Mathematical Sciences worth the risk and emotional stress.
Hey guys so I am a first year BCom student gonna major in econ/fin and have a genuine interest in these areas. I know that if I want to go far in this industry and land a proper job in the economist/finance field maths skills are gonna be important. In high school I did methods and scored 33 raw and was never the strongest at maths (all my other subjects involved writing), however I do find it interesting and can enjoy the aspect of trying heaps of different problems in maths.
I want to maybe pick up the concurrent diploma in mathematical sciences starting next year to both get that maths qualification but also just develop my quantitative skills which I will need if I am serious about economics. I am taking Calc1 as a breadth next semester to satisfy prereq and also just see how uni math goes.
The issue is I am concerned the workload to will be much heavier in comparison to the Bcom due to the nature of the maths subjects and their difficulty, which may end up ruining my WAM (currently 80.250 but thats only after sem1. Is it worth picking up the diploma? Are its benefits in both my actual skills and qualifications going to assist me down the line in post grad or employment. Notably will a (potentially significantly) lower WAM from powering through some maths as I try get up to speed/manage it cause harm in my employability at some higher end jobs, or even ruin my odds at things like honours (econ) which I would be keen to undertake if I could manage to get accepted.
I am just a bit cautious about making this big decision then destryoing my wam and future opportunities (and also compromising my social life).
All input and help appreciated :)
Thanks!
