Before getting these fish I had heard a few warnings about not keeping them in a bedroom, because these fish croak, but they all seemed to have come from people who have not kept them there. I couldn't find any actual experiences of keeping them in a bedroom. I've had them for 4 months at this point, 1 male and 2 females in a 15 gallon bookshelf community tank and I can say - its not bad at all. First of all, I hear croaks daily, but they are sparse throughout the day, since these fish only croak over territorial disputes when they are flaring at each other. Unlike frogs, they don't sit in a corner constantly croaking. They croak during the day and at dusk/dawn, but at night if your room is completely dark they will sleep. Once in a blue moon you might hear a croak at night, idk if they sometimes bump into each other during sleep or what, but I have never woken up from one. The volume of the sound is comparable to a cricket, but its such a gentle rattle/croak that it doesn't startle you awake. You would have to be a very light, daytime napper for it to be bothersome. These fish also seem to have rich social lives :) On some days there will be a big conflict with croaking, flaring, and chasing. But the next day you might find them all hanging out in a circle peacefully as if they are having a workplace meeting. Really fun fish, which I highly recommend, and personally haven't had issues with keeping in a bedroom.
