How do you guys process cruelty?

General question

I'm in the park and I see the cutest happiest dog coming over towards me. He zooms past me and starts chasing a squirrel. He's obviously hunting it down, enjoying the thrill of the chase.

It's such a tiny event but it made me reconsider how I process cruelty in general. When I see it in humans I get repulsed and I avoid said individual. When I see it in animals, I just chalk it up to nature.

Is there a middle-ground somewhere? Is there a way to navigate this world without being repulsed by the darkness? What is the darkness anyway, and to what extent is it a natural part of life, and to what extent is it something to fight against and to try to diminish
