Want enterprise adoption? Do this please Cursor...

Question / Discussion

Why not just put a rolling cost indicator in the chat interface?

It's currently very very difficult for enterprises with fixed budgets to use the tool, because it's very, very, very difficult to understand the current rolling costs.

Individual team members have no idea what they're spending day to day, and cost prediction and budget control is basically impossible.

If I were you I'd put aside the inevitable 'if people can see the cost of their next prompt they might not spend the money' concerns and get into a mindset that 'enterprise customers *are our business* and if we please them, we might lose the odd user or see usage drop in some classes of customer, but we'll gain lots of big enterprise users which will dwarf the losses.'

If you add an optional interface block somewhere above/below the prompt input (I can't tell you how important is is that lives IN the chat interface, and is constantly visible if the user wantts to see it) that shows:

  • The cost of this prompt
    • This will drive some cost awareness in our teams - total tokens x model cost per token. Easy peasy for you guys.
  • The cost of this chat so far
  • The users total running cost in this billing cycle

...and then if the user is an company/team admin...

  • Show me the team/account total spend this billing cycle,
  • An average team cost per day, per team and per team member
  • Give me this in the app interface. Don't make me leave the tool.

Bonus points for :

  • Localisation
    • Show us the costs in our local currency, as best you can convert it. Put a ~ in front of it if needs be. Ideally, let us set the currency and conversion rate.
    • Making people do rolling, constant currency conversion adds cognitive load that nobody needs.

Quadruple bonus points if we can set budgets with soft/hard limits and notifications:

  • Individual

  • Team

  • Account level

  • Soft limit capabilities to give users a bit of flex if they're in the middle of something.

  • Email us and give us in app alerts on a cadence we can define with rolling spend data, projected 'your budget will run out on X date based on the spend so far this billing cycle' etc info.

Adding that lot won't be a huge amount of effort on your part, but it's incredibly high value to enterprise users.

We'll be able to at least attempt to control costs and align to the (fixed) budgets we have.

Clarity of spend is *the* strongest sales narrative you can have in enterprise land.

I rarely claim to be '100% sure' about anything, but I promise that if you add these capabilities in the app interface, and make it easy for us to understand our current and (ideally) projected costs, you'll see HUGE enterprise growth in the next 12 months.

I've watched amazing tools that could have taken £m's out of my budget dropped like a stone in favour of weaker ones, *entirely* because their consumption based pricing model was so difficult to predict and control.
