Former fed with private sector job offer at 105 payments… what to do?

Advice

I’m a recently fired fed considering a job offer in the private sector. These are my PSLF stats:

  • $35k loan balance across 2 consolidation loans (grad and undergrad)
  • 93 confirmed qualifying payments (should be 105, assuming I’m able to go through the buyback process for SAVE forbearance once I hit 120)
  • Consolidated in March 2024 for the one-time payment adjustment, was automatically transferred from PAYE to SAVE during that process
  • Have never made a payment since the loans were consolidated as the SAVE forbearance began while my IDR application was processing

I haven’t made any changes to my repayment plan or gotten out of the SAVE forbearance due to the uncertainty and the time remaining before I’d qualify for forgiveness.

However, my department was targeted heavily by DOGE, and I was forced out of my position in March 2025 (currently on administrative leave).

Those efforts have impacted nonprofits and public agencies in my field, and I expect things to only get worse now that the “beautiful” bill has been passed. Because of this, I’ve been unable to find work with a PSLF-qualifying org, but I have a job offer in the private sector I’m considering taking.

I don’t want to lose the time I’ve earned toward PSLF, but I’m not sure how long this limbo period will last or what to do if I transition to a private sector role at this point (at least until the tides turn).

What advice would you give to someone in this situation?
