Am I overthinking?
Hi Charlotte... and Potato Kings and Queens. Please be kind — I’m new to Reddit and it’s my first time using it. I actually watch all your videos on Facebook and YouTube, and I love them. I don’t really have anyone to share this with, so I thought, why not share it here and let you all be the judge?
So, I’m a 24-year-old female and my husband is 38. We met during the pandemic, hit it off really quickly, and got married three years ago. We now have a daughter together. Everyone warned me about him because of the age gap and also because he’s a bit of a mama’s boy. And yes — sometimes he is, but most of the time he’s a good husband and a very loving father. He’s the sole earner and I’m a stay-at-home wife.
Now here’s the real issue: He has two sisters — both of them are unmarried. I can tell they don’t like or respect me as their sister-in-law, probably because they’re both older than me.
This all started three years ago, about two months before our wedding. As every bride knows, that time is so stressful, even if you don’t say it out loud. One particular night, I was overwhelmed because of issues with my wedding gown. I had a designer make it, but because my weight was fluctuating, we had to alter it three times. I had been with the designer all day, and I was exhausted.
My fiancé picked me up that evening and I asked him to take me home directly, but he insisted we stop at his parents’ house first because he needed to have a discussion with his dad. He told me I could rest in his room while they talked. So I greeted my in-laws and went upstairs to rest.
Soon after, his two sisters came into the room and asked about my dress. I explained that it had to be altered again because I had lost a few pounds. Then, one of them made a comment about how perfect my fiancé’s ex was and how sad it was that they had to break up. I didn’t respond to that — I just said I was really exhausted and needed some rest.
They got offended by that, and the older one yelled at the younger one, saying something like, "We shouldn’t even be here if she doesn’t want to talk to us." She was yelling loud enough that my fiancé and in-laws came upstairs. When I tried to explain what happened, she started playing the victim, saying they just wanted to talk to me about the wedding and that I rudely asked them to leave.
I started to share my side, but by then my fiancé was already arguing with them. I had no energy left, so I just left and took a taxi home. My fiancé called me so many times after that, but I ignored his calls for several days until he finally showed up at my place with his parents to apologize on his sisters’ behalf.
Fast forward to our wedding — the sisters didn’t attend, and honestly, I was happy they didn’t. The day went beautifully.
Now it's 2025. They video call to see our daughter pretty often. But every time they FaceTime, they never ask how I’m doing. They just tell me to give the phone to the baby. Last week, they called again and told me to hand the phone over to my husband. Then they told him that our daughter (who is only 11 months old!) doesn’t even look at them during video calls — and that it’s probably because I don’t teach her that they are her aunts.
My husband just listened quietly while they talked. Then, right after that call, his mother called him too, complaining that I never show her granddaughter and that I ignore her calls. But the truth is, I’m at home all day, taking care of our baby on my own — cooking, cleaning, doing laundry. And when I have free time, I love gardening. So when my baby sleeps, I spend time outside. Sometimes I miss their calls, but I always call back. And when I do, they don’t even pick up.
After the calls, my husband turned to me and asked if what they said was true. I explained everything, but he accused me of hating his family. We had a big argument. The truth is, we don’t argue often, but whenever we do, it’s always because of his mom, sisters, or family.
I just don’t know anymore. I don’t know if I’m overthinking. I’m sorry this story is so messy — English isn’t my first language. But I’m really confused and hurt.
Any advice? Please? 🥺
