Ciao magazine is a monthly Shojo magazine published by Shogakukan starting in 1977 after having begun life as a supplement of Betsucomi. Other notable Shojo/Josei magazines under this company are Betsucomi, Cheese!, Flowers, and Sho-Comi. Ciao has the 2nd highest physical magazine circulation among Shojo/Josei magazines, only behind its main competitor Ribon. The young elementary and middle-school aged target demographic, cheap magazine price, and abundance of furoku (free gifts included with each magazine) are likely contributors to its high circulation.

Interestingly, Ciao had a brief period from the mid-80s to the early 90s where it was trying to shift toward an older target demographic (this was when the revolutionary girl Utena manga began being published in the magazine). However, in the mid-90s they began to shift back toward a younger elementary and middle-school demographic again and have maintained that approximate age demographic ever since. In fact, Ciao’s readership skews a bit younger than Ribon’s (although there are still Shojo magazines that target younger by straddling Kodomo and Shojo like Puchigumi magazine).

Another interesting thing to know is that Ciao magazine manga started getting anime adaptations in full force during the 90s as well. Alongside this, from the late 90s onward Ciao began publishing more anime tie-in manga like the Aikatsu manga, Kirby, magical idol pastel Yumi, etc.

Ciao had a sister magazine called Ciao Dx which published a lot of horror, and also has a web publishing site associated with it today called Ciao Plus (formerly Ciao Comi).

Some big hits from this magazine are Kirarin Revolution, Pon de Mirumo, Corrector Yui, Happy Happy Clover, Hamtaro, the Magic of chocolate, Age 12, Denno Coil manga, Gokujō!! Mecha Mote Iinchō, wedding peach, Alpen Rose, and Slow Step (by Mitsuru Adachi!) and more (although mostly concentrated in East Asia in terms of popularity).

Due to the younger target demographic of Ciao and the fact that manga readers in the west skew older, we haven’t gotten very many Ciao manga licensed in English. I’m not a dedicated Ciao fan, but I would like to see Ciao titles like “Uesugi-kun wa Onnanoko wo Yametai” and “Alpen Rose” come to English.
